Are Business Signs Hard to Maintain?

Customers are attracted to businesses with well-maintained, great-looking signs. This makes sign services a great investment.

Sign services involve regular upkeep of business signage to deal with weathering, erosion, fading, and, in the case of electrical signs, burnt out bulbs. At a minimum this should be done at least seasonally and include a deep clean on occasion where frames, panels and hardware are removed and cleaned as well.

If this sounds like a lot of work, well, it might be, depending on the sign.

Outdoors signs need regular maintenance to wipe off dust, debris, leaves, bird droppings and grime. Dirt and pollen can be especially problematic if there is construction work nearby or lots of trees. Neglecting routine cleaning for too long can lead to permanent damage to a sign that would lead to costly repairs.

Some signs involve electricity or require additional equipment like extension ladders and/or poles and brushes that a business owner doesn’t have or want to buy. Let’s look at a few of the popular types of signs.

Pylon signs: these are tall, freestanding signs that list business in a vertical order. Malls are fond of these. They require special equipment because of their height (20’-80’ or more!). They’re cleaned with water and mild soap using a soft cloth or sponge. Abrasives and pressure washing are avoided. They are also waxed to help extend the life of the sign.

Monument signs: these types of signs are wider than they are tall, and have the name generally at eye-level. Often there is attractive landscaping around the base that will need tending. Some of these signs are metal, some are wood, some are stone or other materials. Each requires its own consideration for cleaning.

Channel letters: these are 3-D letters spelling out the business name. There are lots of nooks and crannies to be cleaned, especially if birds have taken to living in them. A gentle cleanser and soft cloth and cleaning motion will restore the signs' luster and make the name pop.

Each of these types of signs has a painted or an electric option to make them stand out or shine at night. Painted signs need touch-ups to fix fading and chipping. Electric signs need burnt-out bulbs replaced and outlets and cables checked for damage.

In addition to the time it takes to clean business signs, there’s a lot of know-how involved to get the job done right. Hiring professional sign services is a time-saving and affordable way to ensure your business signage maintenance is taken care of expertly, all year long.
